Listed are 5 quick ways to improve your lawn. Your lawn will require a lot of maintenance to stay looking bright and healthy, so check this list first to see if you can implement any of these tips!
1. Change the way you water your lawn - by turning on sprinklers at set times doesnt respond to the needs of the lawn, and wont consider changes in temperature, humidity etc. By watering your lawn more thoroughly and on a less frequent basis, your grass will appreciate it!
The reason behind this is that if you water your lawn less frequently, the grass roots will grow deeper into the soil to reach the water they require. This means that in dryer times they have a better chance of surviving the heat, and they can access more hard to reach water reserves in the soil.
2. Aerate your grass - In busy periods for your lawn, such as the summer, your lawn can become compacted and loose much of the natural oxygen that is found in the soil content. By aerating your lawn with a lawn aerator, or various other garden tools, you can bring some life back into your soil. If you don’t have any of this equipment, try using a simple garden fork and sink it to a depth of around 3 cm into the soil. Pull it out gently, without distrubing the grass, and this will allow air directly into the soil.
3. Use an organic garden fertilizer - If you live near a farm, you have a garden fertilizer factory at your disposal. Organic plant or animal waste is a great boost of nutrients to any soil. An age old gardening tip is to use horse manure on your roses, so why not try this on your lawn?!
You can also use shop bought organic fertilizers, but i would advise using the cheaper option first !
4. Compost your kitchen waste - By recycling your kitchen waste, such as potatoe peels, egg shells and coffee grounds, you can make a fantastic free compost which improves both your soil and your grass quality. Start by making a compost heap, and when this has matured, distribute it freely across the lawn.
5. Introduce some creepy crawlies - If your lawn lacks natural wildlife, such as worms, insects and various other animals, then it is likely your grass quality will suffer. Worms, as an example, help to recycle soil, breakdown organic matter and aerate as they go. If your garden lacks these critters, consider buying some in and setting them loose in the garden.
