Keeping good care of your gardening tools will ensure they both last longer and perform better over the busy spring/summer months. By following a few of these simple maintenance methods, you should never have to throw away those rusty secautors or tired old garden forks.
Metal or bladed garden tools such as secateurs, pruners and saws can all suffer from rust, which will severely affect the performance of the tool.
I find one of the best preventative methods for preserving your tools is to brush off any mud and remove standing water with an old cloth. Then give the tool a light oiling, to prevent any of the metal oxidising. For blunt garden tools, sharpen with a sharpening stone and preserve the metal, again, by rubbing some oil over the blade to prevent further rust build up.
For larger mechanised garden tools, such as the lawn mower or hedge trimming tools, be sure to spray liberally with lubricant oil after use. That way, the moving parts are less likely to jam and seize up over long periods of inactivity, as dirt and dust is less likely to settle.
Similar to cleaning paint brushes after use, a thorough clean of your gardening tools will ensure the tools last years longer than expected, and will be as good as new for next season.

that’s right! It’s the same way on how I clean and maintain our gardening tolls at home or any materials that we think should last longer.
