The tree swing is a garden essential if you have children
Seeing as im in a gardening theme mood at the moment, how about making a tree swing for the kids? This DIY tip is a simple enough bit of gardening DIY that can add a bit of fun to the garden.
All you really need is:
- A tree that has a good solid branch, enough to hold an adults weight (this is so you are totally sure it will hold a childs weight)
- A length of solid twine or rope - 2 x 4 metre lengths should be enough here.
- A sturdy plank of wood - say 18inches by 8inches - ideally sanded smooth
1. Drill 4 holes in the plank in each corner, leaving some room around the drill holes - so as to maintain a bit of strength within the wood.
2. Throw the rope over the branch and thread the rope through two sides of the plank and tie a strong knot - to prevent the seat falling out.
3. Repeat this process for the other side and tie off the knots to complete the circuit.
4. Move the ropes at tree level into a parallel position to allow the swing to move freely. Trim off any excess rope so you have a level seat to sit on.
Although this is the quick and easy method of making a tree swing, you may come across problems with the ropes slipping etc.. In this situation you may have to screw the ropes to the branches for stability, but i find the rustic swings are often the best. Give it a try!
